Nella giovane Ghalia rivive lo spirito di Zeina, annegata il giorno in cui è nata. Ossessionata dai suoi ricordi, Ghalia si trasferisce a Damasco per studiare recitazione e prendere coscienza di se stessa. È qui che incontra Fouad, aspirante regista affascinato dalla sua ambiguità che la aiuta a trovare una stanza in affitto in una casa, abitata da altri ragazzi provenienti da differenti regioni della Siria. Mentre dentro i confini di questo appartamento-laboratorio sboccia l’amore tra Ghalia, Fouad e Zeina, nelle strade della città scoppia la rivoluzione che gradualmente invade il loro isolamento.
Ghalia is inhabited by the soul of Zeina, a girl who drowned the day she was born. Haunted by Zeina’s past life, Ghalia travels to Damascus to study acting and understand her present condition. She meets Fouad, an aspiring filmmaker who becomes fascinated by Ghalia’s duality. He takes her under his wing and helps her find a place to live in a Damascene house, now converted into a dorm inhabited by young Syrians from different regions. Within the confines of the house, Fouad’s love for Ghalia and Zeina blossoms while the tumultuous events in Syria start unfolding in the streets around them gradually encroaches on their idyllic isolation.
Nato nel 1945 a Quneitra, Mohamed Malas è uno dei più importanti registi siriani contemporanei. Si diploma in cinema a Mosca e agli inizi degli anni Settanta ritorna in Siria dove realizza i primi documentari e cortometraggi. Nel 1983 debutta alla regia di un lungometraggio con Dreams of the City, presentato alla Berlinale e premiato alle Journées Cinématographiques de Carthage. Tra le sue opere di maggior successo, The Night (1992), On the Sands, Under the Sun (1998), Passion (2004) e Al Mahhed (2007).
Born in Quneitra in 1945, Mohamed Malas is one of the most important contemporary Syrian directors. He graduated in film in Moscow and in the early 1970s returned to Syria where he made his first documentaries and short films. In 1983 he made his directing feature debut with Dreams of the City, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and also received an award at the Carthage Film Festival. Some of his most important work include The Night (1992), On the Sands, Under the Sun (1998), Passion (2004), and Al Mahhed (2007).
